Dog days of summer in Myrtle Beach
When you think about the dog days of summer in Myrtle Beach, chances are you may be thinking about soaking up the sun at the beach or swimming pool. You could also be thinking about a family barbeque in the backyard. However, at the end of the day, you will be thinking about a good night’s sleep in a comfortably cool bedroom. There are several things you can do to get thru these hot days and nights without maxing out your air conditioning system.
- Reduce the use of appliances that generate heat. Of course, you can’t go on strike and refuse to cook for your family. But you can choose when to use your oven or stove top. Perhaps making meals later in the evening after the sun goes down, using your outdoor grill more often, or even making cold salads and sandwiches.
- Keep your blinds and shades closed. Windows can let in a tremendous amount of heat. If you’re heading out to work in the morning, keep those blinds and shades closed. You can also install tinted window film, which cuts down the amount of heat transferred thru the glass.
- Take advantage of fans. Yes it is true – fans do NOT change air temperature. However, they do circulate the air and therefore keep it more comfortable. If you are using ceiling fans, adjust them to pull the cool air from the floor up to the ceiling for optimum circulation.
Even though we have many steamy days ahead here in South Carolina, you can be proactive in keeping your home cool. While air conditioning repairs can sometimes be unavoidable, the best defense is a good offense. Maintain your equipment in the off season! Change your filters every month!
