Repair Or Replace?
When your HVAC systems breaks down, you have a choice: repair or replace. Of course, knowing when to do which is a balancing act between pouring money into your existing system or investing in a brand new one.
There are several things you should consider before making your decision, as there is no “right” or “wrong” answer:
- Repairs are typically less expensive than replacement, however, it may cost you more in the long run
- Installing a new energy efficient system can pay for itself over time, but sometimes simple repairs can prolong the life so an immediate replacement is not needed
- If the problem is with an evaporator coil that has numerous leaks or is corroded, it’s best to replace
The more efficient the unit, the higher the initial price – however, the more efficient unit will actually save money over time as it requires less fuel to cool/heat your home. Keep in mind that NOTHING affects your comfort more than how well it is installed. Sizing, balance, returns and a host of other variables must be accounted for when a new system is installed. No two houses are alike – so choosing an experienced installer is critical.
